Class 3 and Class 4 impact-resistant shingles

In a part of the country where hail is a regular visitor, an impact-rated roof is one of the smartest upgrades you can make. These architectural shingles look like a standard premium roof and are engineered to stand up to far harder hits.

What the ratings mean

Impact ratings come from the UL 2218 test, which drops steel balls onto roofing from set heights and checks for cracking. The higher the class, the larger the ball the shingle survives.

RatingTestIn practice
Class 31.75-inch steel ballA meaningful step up from standard shingles
Class 42-inch steel ballThe highest rating in the test; may qualify for insurance discounts

Why they make sense here

St. Louis County sees damaging hail often enough that many homeowners replace a roof more than once. An impact-rated roof is designed to break that cycle: fewer cracked shingles, fewer claims, and a roof that looks good for longer.

Installed to a higher standard

An impact-rated shingle only performs if it's installed correctly. Every roof includes a full tear-off, decking repairs where needed, ice and water shield at eaves and valleys, synthetic underlayment, new flashing and drip edge, and balanced ventilation. We follow the manufacturer's installation requirements exactly, which keeps your warranty intact.

Before you choose: Call your insurance agent and ask whether your policy offers a discount for a Class 4 roof, and what documentation they need. We'll provide the product information and certificates after installation.

Colors and styles

Impact-rated architectural shingles come in the full range of popular colors, from weathered wood and charcoal to deep slate grays that suit brick and stone homes. We'll bring samples so you can see them against your home in daylight.

Common questions

Will a Class 4 roof lower my insurance premium?

Some insurers offer discounts for Class 4 impact-resistant roofs. Policies vary, so ask your agent what applies to you before choosing.

Do impact-resistant shingles look different?

Not noticeably. They're dimensional architectural shingles available in the same range of colors and profiles as standard premium shingles.

Can Class 4 shingles still be damaged by hail?

Yes. Very large hail can still damage any roof. An impact rating means the shingle passed a standardized test, which reduces the chance of damage from typical storms; it isn't a guarantee.

How much more do impact-resistant shingles cost?

They cost more than standard architectural shingles. For many homeowners, potential insurance savings and fewer storm claims help offset the difference. We'll price both so you can compare.
